"A Willingness to Act"
Acrylic on Canvas
2019
This piece was created for the North Dakota Humanities Game Changer Event exploring The Four Freedoms. I was inspired by the quote “The only real prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear” by Aung Suu Kyi. This piece depicts the feeling of the moment of release. A moment when we are able take action and open the cages inside of ourselves to let our fears fly away. Once released and transformed we can take action to help and support others find freedom from fear as well. For me this painting was about starting with ourselves and moving outward. In the painting you see the birds carrying off the keys to the cages. This is the willingness to act on a larger scale. To start with yourself, then others in your city, your country, and all over the world. We must share our keys.

"Awakening"
Mixed Media on Canvas
2018
This piece was part of the 2019 traveling Human Right's Art's Festival by the Human Family. This piece is about waking up to what is actually happening around us, being willing to see past the surface of our day to day routine and comforts, and in doing so admitting to ourselves that by doing nothing to help make a change we may be inadvertently contributing to the very things we so strongly oppose.
